Inclement Weather Make-up Days
Banks School District will be making up student and staff hours by:
1) Starting on February 6th, 2017, the school day will be extended 15 minutes for the rest of the school year. This will make the dismissal time at Banks Elementary
School 3:00 p.m. and the dismissal time at the MS/HS 3:16 p.m. This will add
back 3.7 days of time for our students.
2) June 13th and 14th will be full student contact days. June 15th will be a half day
and the last day for students. This will add back 2.0 student contact days.
This totals approximately 5.7 student contact make-up days.
As we worked through the process, our goal was to add back a significant portion of the nine snow days and maximize student contact time. We also took into account that extending the end of the school year would cause attendance issues with our students. People plan summer activities well ahead of time and adding significant days at the end of the year would not be the best utilization for the make-up days.
We will continue to do late starts on Wednesdays for our staff collaboration time. We felt that the collaboration time is extremely important for student success. This time allows staff to improve instructional practices, focus instruction on the needs of individual students based on the analysis of assessment data, and other tasks not possible during the regular school day. This time has a direct, positive impact on the quality of instruction in the classroom and the achievement of our students.
As we head into February, we are hoping for nice weather. If we do have more snow days, we would have to consider expanding our options to include grading days and late start days. Hopefully, we are done with snow days for this year.
School Board Meetings
The District School Board meets the second Monday of the month. The next meeting of the Board is Monday, March 13, 2017. The District Office Board Room at 6:30 PM. The public is invited to attend. Please call the District Office at 503.324.8591 if you have any questions.
Budget Committee Applicants Sought
Banks School District is seeking applicants to participate on the Budget Committee.
An applicant needs to be a registered voter in the Banks School District. For an application please go to the Banks School District website/forms/budget committee application. Applications can be mailed, dropped off or emailed (firstname.lastname@example.org) to the District Office. If you have questions, please contact Joni Spencer, Business Manager.
Hazardous weather or unexpected emergencies may require changes in school and bus schedules. The decision to cancel classes or delay the start of school will be prior to 5:45 a.m. If schools are forced to close during the school day, every effort is made to contact parents. School Board Elections 2017
Three seats on the Banks School Board are up for election in May 2017. Interested candidates may file between February 8 and March 16, 2017. For more election information please visit the Washington County website.
Identification of Disabled Students
The Banks School District is seeking assistance in locating children with disabilities (birth through age 21) who have not graduated from high school and currently are not attending nor receiving other special services from public schools.
Oregon and federal law mandate educational services for children with disabilities. Banks School District provides educational programs and services for eligible children from kindergarten through high school. Services provided are appropriate to each child's disability. The Northwest Regional Education Service District (NWRESD) provides educational services for eligible children from birth to kindergarten.
Parents, guardians, or anyone who knows of a child (age five through 21*) with a disability currently not receiving educational services are asked to notify the Student Services Office at 503-324-5151.

Radon Plan 2016-17

Lead levels tested in Banks
Banks conducted 63 tests for lead levels in June 2016. One drinking fountain was replaced, and the lead levels in Banks School District are below the EPA's recommended. Levels. The official record of lead testing is available in the District Office.

Open Enrollment HB3681 2017-18
Students residing in other districts who wish to attend a school in the Banks School District may submit their application for an HB3681 transfer only for a school/grade with open slots. Open enrollment numbers for 2017-18 School Year were adopted by the Board on February 13, 2017. If there are more applications than available slots, the District will conduct a lottery to fill the slots. This type of transfer does not require permission from the home district. Forms will be available online after February 24, 2017.
The window for Open Enrollment forms to be accepted is March 1 - March 31, 2017. Requests must be submitted to the District Office by March 31. Applications will not be accepted if they are faxed or time-stamped after March 31, or requesting a school or grade level that does not have open slots. Notifications will be mailed by April 29.
